The American College on Saturday observed the World Wetlands Day, and the students, under the college’s Green Management Programme, visited Samanatham tank in Madurai.
Programme coordinator Rajesh told the students that wetlands were crucial for human survival. They were one of the most productive environments in the world as they improved water quality, and controlled soil erosion. They were also home to at least one third of threatened and endangered species, he said.
Kanmais (tanks) around Madurai were mostly covered with water hyacinth. This posed a problem for birds and humans. The sooner the water hyacinth was removed, the better for the birds and other aquatic life, he told the students. Around 50 students participated in the event.
Project leader of Green Management Programme Bhagavathy was present.
