The incident has raised concerns about illegal power usage and the risks involved in unauthorised water extraction.
A 58-year-old woman was electrocuted while attempting to draw power for a water pump in Anandapura, Chamarajpet in Bengaluru. The victim, Selvi Murugan, was trying to operate the pump to extract water from the Cauvery water pipeline. She is survived by her four children.
The Chamarajpet police have received a complaint from local residents. “We have received a complaint, and an FIR will be filed soon. A probe will be launched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident,” a police official stated.
An Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) from the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) claimed that the woman was illegally drawing power to run the pump. “This area is a slum. Despite having legal water connections, residents often install pumps to extract water directly from the pipeline. Unfortunately, while attempting to fix the wiring, she was electrocuted,” the official explained.
A Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (Bescom) official stated that an investigation would be conducted to determine how the woman and other residents were accessing electricity for their pumps. “Illegally drawing power is dangerous, and can lead to fatal accidents like this. People must avoid such activities,” the official warned.
