We believe it is ‘rarest of rare case’, say parents of the deceased doctor

Parents, lawyers, politicians, and civil society express dissatisfaction over life imprisonment verdict in doctor's rape and murder case.
Expressing their displeasure over the judgment by the Sealdah Session Court which sentenced the convict Sanjay Roy, to life imprisonment, the parents of the doctor who was raped and murdered at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, said on Monday (January 20, 2025) that they believe that it was rarest of the rare case.
Earlier in the day, Additional District and Session Judge, Sealdah Anirban Das said that he does not believe that it is rarest of rare case to award death sentence to the convict.
“I do not agree with the judge saying it’s not the rarest of the rare case. I think it is, because my daughter was on duty in a government-run hospital. CBI could not prove it’s a rare enough case, it’s a failure of the CBI. No one can compensate for my loss,” the mother of the victim told media persons.

The lawyers representing the family and the CBI had prayed for capital punishment for Sanjay Roy who was convicted of the offence on January 18 (Saturday). The lawyers representing the family alleged of some lapses by the CBI.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that had the West Bengal police investigated the case the State government would have secured death penalty in the case.
“This was a serious case. Had it been under our purview, we would have ensured death penalty long back,” Ms. Banerjee told media persons. The Chief Minister emphasised that in three other cases which the West Bengal police investigated state police ensured capital punishment through thorough investigations concluded within 54-60 days.
