Gang behind dacoity on National Highway-44 near Hyderabad nabbed by police, with four members caught and two at large.
The gang behind the dacoity on National Highway-44 at Pebbair, nearly 160 km south of Hyderabad, reported four days ago was nabbed by Wanaparthy district police on Sunday (December 22, 2024.)
While four members of the gang were caught, two others were still at large. Multi-zone-II IGP V. Satyanarayana, sharing details of the case, said the police got information on the morning of December 18 that unidentified persons assaulted and looted a family on roadside at Pebbair.
On rushing to the spot, police learnt that the victim G. Rajini (54) an Anganwadi employee from Jagityal district, was returning home along with her family and friends after a pilgrimage to Tirupathi and Arunachalam when the crime was committed. The woman, along with the family and friends, stopped their car at Pebbair to break the journey around 2 a.m. on the intervening of night of December 17 and 18.
After attending to nature’s calls, they took rest in the car and slipped into sleep. Members of the gang, on noticing the passengers were fast asleep, untied the travel bags atop the car and let the place. “However, they returned to the car after not finding any valuables in the bags,” the IGP said.
This time, the gang shattered the windscreens of the car, assaulted the passengers inside, forcibly collected the 13.5 tolas of gold jewellery the women wore and fled the spot. After gathering details from the woman, police stepped up patrolling in the district. During a regular vehicle checking at Rangapur crossroads, police intercepted a vehicle and detained four persons behaving in suspicious manner.
When grilled, the quartet admitted to the crime. “Initially, we registered a case of robbery but altered the section of law to dacoity as the detained persons confirmed that two more of their associates were involved in the crime,” Wanaparthy SP Ravula Giridhar said.
The Cubbon Park administration has said that any event organised inside the park with over 20 participants need prior permission from the Horticulture Department and in some cases, even permission from the police. This comes after the row over organisers of Cubbon Reads, a reading community, being detained on Saturday, as several turned up for a Secret Santa party.
“The constitutional vision or preambular objectives cannot be realised if we do not invest time and effort in working our institutions. Working out institutions is effective, if not the only, way of working our constitution,” said Supreme Court Justice P.S. Narasimha while delivering the second Justice E.S. Venkataramiah Centennial Memorial Lecture on Sunday on the topic Reimagining Constitutional Institutions: Integrity, Efficiency, and Accountability.
