Members of the Nagapattinam District Development Committee, supported by various organisations and residents, staged a hunger strike on Sunday near the town’s new bus stand. They opposed the proposed relocation of the bus stand to the outskirts and demanded infrastructure development.
Led by committee president N.P. Bhaskaran, the protest drew participation from farmers’ associations, consumer rights groups, shop owners, transport operators, self-help groups, students, and members of social service organisations.
Among the demands were expanding the bus stand at its present location in the Aurithidal area instead of relocating it to Sellur, restoring full medical services at the government hospital near the bus stand, and establishing an IT park on government land near the district revenue office. Traders at the new bus stand shut their shops in solidarity with those observing fast.
The Cubbon Park administration has said that any event organised inside the park with over 20 participants need prior permission from the Horticulture Department and in some cases, even permission from the police. This comes after the row over organisers of Cubbon Reads, a reading community, being detained on Saturday, as several turned up for a Secret Santa party.
