As part of the expansion plan, the Tiruchi Collector has given his recommendation to the State government to merge 22 village panchayats with the Tiruchi Corporation.
The recommendation was based on a survey conducted by the Rural Development department and the Corporation officials on the direction of the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration to identify the urbanised suburbs.
According to sources, several villages in Anthanallur, Manachanallur, Manikandam, Lalgudi, and Thiruverumbur blocks have been proposed to be merged with the Corporation. Village panchayats such as Bikshandarkovil, Koothur, Thalakudi, Madakudi, Appadurai, Esanaikorai, Pudukudi, Panayakurichi, Gundur, Malliampathur, Maruthandakurichi, Kambarasampettai, Mutharasanallur, Nachikurichi, Somarasampettai, Nagamandalam, and Punganur were among the rural local bodies that have been reportedly recommended for merging with the Tiruchi Corporation.
Collector M. Pradeep Kumar told The Hindu that the recommendation had been sent to the State government. The recommendation was being scrutinised by senior officials. During the process, one or two panchayats might be excluded from expansion. A Government Order was expected in a few days. Only after the G.O. was issued, details of the villages to be merged with the Corporation would be clearly known.
After the G.O. is issued, the officials of the rural local bodies would formally hand over the registers, population details, and other documents of their respective villages to the Corporation, Mr. Pradeep Kumar added.
It was in 2011 that the Tiruchi Corporation jurisdiction was expanded with the merger of Tiruverumbur town panchayat, Pappakurichi, Ellakudi, Keezha Kalkandarkottai, and Alathur village panchayats, The geographical spread of the Corporation increased to 167.23 sq. km. from 146.90 sq. km. With the proposed merger of rural local bodies spreading across 120 sq. km., the geographical spread of the city is set to expand to about 287.23 sq. km. After the delimitation process, the number of wards would increase to 100 from 65.
The Cubbon Park administration has said that any event organised inside the park with over 20 participants need prior permission from the Horticulture Department and in some cases, even permission from the police. This comes after the row over organisers of Cubbon Reads, a reading community, being detained on Saturday, as several turned up for a Secret Santa party.
