Tamil Nadu government seeks approval for new medical colleges in six districts, highlighting healthcare infrastructure development and achievements.
The Tamil Nadu government has sought approval from the Centre to establish medical colleges in six districts including Tenkasi, said Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ma. Subramanian, during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the labour room and modern operation theatre at Community Welfare Centre at Eral in Thoothukudi district here on Wednesday.
The construction of the labour room and operation theatre is being built under the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund initiative of Ashwini Fisheries Limited at a cost of ₹2.54 crore. At the same event Thoothukudi Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi inaugurated 12 new buildings for Primary Health Centres across the district. These facilities were built at a cost of ₹5.29 crores.
Speaking at the event the Health Minister said, “In Thoothukudi, 29 medical infrastructure projects worth ₹255.77 crore are currently under way. Among them, the multi speciality block at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital is a key project.”
He highlighted the recent appointment of 2,642 doctors across Tamil Nadu. He also emphasised that all vacant medical positions in Thoothukudi district have been filled, achieving 100% occupancy.
He further mentioned that Chief Minister M. K. Stalin will soon inaugurate the 28 newly established medical centres across Tamil Nadu, including seven in the corporation limits of Thoothukudi.
He stated that the State government has sought approval for the establishment of 50 new PHC’s, 500 health sub centres and new medical colleges in six districts.
Mr. Subramanian also highlighted “Idhayam Kappom” which ensures the stocking of essential life saving medicines across all 8,713 health sub centres and 2,286 PHC’s in the State. By stocking three critical types of medication, 15,000 lives have been saved.
