Celebrating Sara Joseph's unwavering resistance and literary brilliance at Kerala Sahitya Akademi, a milestone in Malayalam literature.
When I write, it’s like wrestling with echoes from the past, tangled in an endless internal battle. Beneath that struggle lies a raw, unfiltered helplessness, fierce protest, a defiant resistance against the deep, unhealed wounds left by society’s denial of justice. Great writing emerges from the turmoil of injustice, where denial fuels fearless voices, writer-activist Sara Joseph had once said.
This spirit of unwavering resistance was the heart of Sara Josephinte Lokangal (The Worlds of Sara Joseph) – Life, Writings, and Resistance, a two-day celebration that began at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi on Saturday. Organised by writers, artists, and socio-political activists, the event marks the 60th anniversary of the writer’s literary journey.
“She was permanently in opposition to the power structure,” they reflected, celebrating a writer whose words were not just stories but acts of defiance, shaping consciousness, and challenging the status quo.
“Sara Joseph is a milestone in Malayalam literature,” said acclaimed Kannada writer Banu Mushtaq, who inaugurated the event.
“She is not just a name, but a persona, the fiery spirit of resistance and a soul that glides effortlessly through the autumn of the literary world. She is like a bird soaring through the vast expanse of emotions, roots and boundless horizons. She needs no support from the tree, her wings are her strength. That’s why she shines as the Pole Star of Malayalam literature, illuminating the sky through unwavering brilliance.”
“Life placed countless obstacles in her past. Even the marriage at a tender age could not stifle her literary voice. She broke through the labyrinth of marriage. Balancing the burdens of domesticity, raising children, and pursuing her education. She created her extraordinary destiny. To walk trough fire, carrying all her burdens and yet reach the shore without a single bump. Her journey was nothing short of exhilarating,” she said.
“Sara, Banu and myself are contemporaries, not in terms of age, but in our personal struggles, and social constraints we faced and in our approaches in writing, philosophy and commitment. We are the travellers of the same journey, unfaced by societal criticism or intimidation. We have consistently expressed our truth, commitment, in unwavering proportion,” said Telugu writer Volga, who was the chief guest.

KPCC spokesperson M. Lakshman on Friday said that petitioner H. Ramamurthy had manufactured ‘fake documents’ and submitted these to the Raj Bhavan seeking sanction for prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah for providing “deemed extension” for C-category mines to eight mining companies in alleged violation of the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 2015.
