Telangana's potential to attract domestic tourists declines in 2023. The State government is focusing on eco-tourism and spiritual tourism to attract visitors and generate revenue.
Telangana’s potential to draw domestic tourists has dropped in 2023 compared to the previous years. While the State was in the list of top 10 States/UTs of India in number of domestic tourist visits in 2013, 2019, and 2022, it did not figure in the list in 2023.
Besides, it did not find a place in the list of top 10 States of India in number of foreign tourist visits in any of the four years, according to the Ministry of Tourism’s India Tourism Data Compendium 2024.
Golconda Fort and Charminar in Hyderabad found spots in the top 10 Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) monuments with the highest Indian visitors footfall during financial years 2022-23 and 2023-24. While Golconda Fort with domestic footfall of 15.27 lakhs and 16.08 lakhs in 2022-23 and 2023-24, respectively, stood in the sixth position, Charminar with 9.29 lakh and 12.90 lakh was in the ninth position. However, the two monuments did not find spots in the top 10 ASI monuments with highest foreign visitors footfall.
To boost tourism, the State government has focused on eco-tourism and spiritual tourism. Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy issued directions to come out with a Tourism Policy. Besides attracting domestic and international tourists, focus is also on generating revenue to the State through the surge in tourism. Developing venues for destination weddings too is being explored. Officials are optimistic that the 72nd edition of Miss World to be held in the State from May 4, will give a boost to the tourism in the State.
