Puducherry Chief Minister mandates Tamil name boards for shops, emphasizing love for language and cultural identity.
Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Tuesday (March 18, 2025) said it was mandatory for shopkeepers to display name of their outlets in Tamil.
Making an intervention during zero hour in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said he does not understand why people are not displaying the name board of shops in Tamil. “It should come from within and there should be a feeling of love for the language. It is mandatory for all shops and business establishments to display the name in Tamil,” he said.
The Chief Minister said he has already given instruction to the officials for preparing invitation for government programmes in Tamil. The issue of non-display of name boards in Tamil was brought to the house by Independent legislator Nehru alias Kuppusamy.
Raising the issue, Mr. Nehru said shops and business outlets are not prominently displaying the name boards in Tamil. “As per rule, they should prominently display the name of the shop in Tamil. The name of shops in other languages should be displayed in small letters so that the name in Tamil could be figured out easily,” he said.

The Puducherry government has decided to launch a scheme on April 14, 2025, to distribute free 20-litre water cans to households in places in the Union Territory (UT) where the quality of drinking water has deteriorated, Minister for Public Works K. Lakshminarayanan informed the Assembly on Wednesday (March 19, 2025).
