Tamil Nadu government encourages education loans for higher studies, benefiting students with financial support and motivation schemes.
The increase in the number of eligible students opting for education loans for pursuing their higher education showed the encouragement by the Tamil Nadu government, said Minister for Cooperatives KR Periakaruppan here on Tuesday.
Speaking at a loan mela function organised by the lead bank in Sivaganga district, he said that from 932 students who received ₹22.3 crore as loan in 2021-22, the number moved up to 1140 students taking ₹22.83 crore in 2022-23. Subsequently, in 2023-24, there were 1,715 students, who were granted ₹33.81 crore for pursuing higher education.
Now, in the current year, till December 2024, 1766 students had taken ₹ 28.24 crore and it is likely that a total of 3,000 students may benefit with ₹42 crore. The district had already conducted nine special camps at block levels and another three at district level.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had launched the “Pudumai Penn” and “Tamizh Pudalvan” schemes for the girls and boys in the State, where they received ₹1,000 every month. This not only motivated the children at the high and higher secondary school levels, but also gave them the confidence to enter into the higher education campuses.
Many of the beneficiaries were stepping into the campuses from their schools for the first time. This would help more and more students to take up higher positions on successful completion of their degrees, Mr. Periakaruppan said and added that the School Education department received an annual budgetary allocation of ₹40,000 crore and the higher education department got ₹7,000 crore, which showed the commitment of the government towards education of the children.
The Minister gave away cheques to the beneficiaries in the presence of District Collector Asha Ajith, DRO S. Selvasurabi, Lead Manager S. Praveen Kumar, MLAs Mangudi and Tamilarasi.
The bank officials said that a total of 81 students received cheques to the tune of ₹3.07 crore on the occasion.
