The Legislative Council turned into a concert hall on March 11 when JD(S) member S.L. Bhoje Gowda sang a full-length folk song. He lightened the mood twice by putting up an impromptu performance during a discussion.
During the proceedings, when members were discussing the problems faced by adolescents, with special reference to female adolescents, the MLC broke into a Kannada song by Gururaj Hoskote describing the pain of a mother while marrying off her daughter.
Earlier, he sang a few lines of a popular Kannada lullaby.
When he intervened during the discussion and sought permission to sing, Chairman Basavaraj Horatti refused. However, when members cheered and expressed their desire to listen to him, Mr. Horatti permitted him.
This unusual act generated amusement among some members with many Ministers, including M.B. Patil and N. Chaluvaraya Swamy, enjoying the song.
While lighthearted moments are not uncommon in the legislature, a member breaking into a full-length song was certainly a novelty.
