Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman meets Kerala Governor and Chief Minister to discuss State issues and Central-State relations.
Union Minister for Finance Nirmala Sitharaman called on Kerala Governor Rajendra Arlekar and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at Kerala House in New Delhi on Wednesday (March 12).
Ms. Sitharaman’s visit follows Mr. Arlekar’s promise to Mr. Vijayan on Tuesday that the former would champion the State’s issues with the Central government.
Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) MPs from Kerala had also attended the meeting. They assured Mr. Vijayan that they would join the Left Democratic Front (LDF) MPs in lobbying for Kerala’s due at the Central government level.
Ms. Sitharaman’s arrival at Kerala House and her breakfast meeting with Mr. Vijayan and Mr. Arlerkar arguably signalled a loosening up in Central-State relations, which have been fraught with disputes over federal funding for Wayanad rehabilitation, limiting the borrowing limit of States, discontinuation of GST compensation, and lately, the Centre’s alleged unwillingness to underwrite Kerala’s “sizeable” honorarium for agitating ASHAs.
K.V. Thomas, Kerala’s special representative in New Delhi, also attended the meeting.
