Tamil Nadu Minister addresses concerns over low compensation for guest lecturers, Chief Minister to consider higher pay.
Tamil Nadu Minister for Higher Education Govi. Chezhiaan said in the Assembly on Tuesday (March 18, 2025) that the Chief Minister would consider and decide on concerns being raised over demands seeking a higher compensation for guest lecturers.
Mr. Chezhiaan was responding to concerns raised in this regard by AIADMK’s Pon. Jayaseelan (Gudalur). Pointing out that guest lecturers were to be paid ₹57,500 a month as per the UGC norms, Mr. Jayaseelan said they were paid less.
“Even after serving for 15 to 20 years, they are being paid ₹15,000 a month, while those on regular service were being paid between ₹1 lakh and ₹1.5 lakh,” Mr. Jayaseelan said. The Minister, in his response, said that the erstwhile AIADMK regime, despite being in power for 10 years between 2011 and 2021 increased the compensation for guest lecturers only by ₹5,000 by increasing from ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 a month.
“But, within a year and a half of coming to power, the DMK government under Chief Minister increased the compensation from ₹20,000 a month to ₹25,000 a month. Your concern will be taken to the Chief Minister and he will decide,” Mr. Chezhiaan said.
