Supreme Court grants CBI's request to remove Datla Sreenivasa Varma as head of Manipur killings investigation team.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday (February 4, 2025) allowed the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) plea to relieve Datla Sreenivasa Varma as the head of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to investigate Manipur’s extra-judicial killings.
The Bench of Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Justices Sanjay Kumar and K.V. Viswanathan was hearing an application by the Central agency to release Mr. Varma.
Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati appeared for the CBI and senior advocate Maneka Guruswamy appeared as the amicus in the case.
The Supreme Court had ordered the CBI to constitute an SIT in 2017 to investigate the killings in Manipur. The top court was hearing a PIL seeking a probe into as many as 1,528 cases of extra-judicial killings in the State.
