The summer festival season in the Nilgiris this year is set to include the first-ever “Plantation Crops Show”.
At a press conference on Tuesday, the Nilgiris District Collector, Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru, said the inclusion of the show would mean that there would be six marquee events as part of the summer festival this year – the others being the 13th Vegetable Show, 11th Annual Spices Show, 20th Rose Show, 127th Flower Show and the 65th Fruit Show.
The plantation crops show will feature exhibitions of plantation crops grown in the district, including tea, coffee, areca nut and others, and will be held at the Kattery Park near Coonoor from May 30 to June 1.
The Collector said the summer festival season would kick off with the Vegetable Show, to be held on May 3 and 4 at Kotagiri, followed by the Spices Show from May 9 to 11 in Gudalur. Concurrently, the 20th Rose Show is to be held from May 10 to May 12 at the Government Rose Garden in Udhagamandalam.
The season will end with the 127th Flower Show which is to be held over six days from May 16 to May 21 at the Government Botanical Garden, the 65th Fruit Show from May 23 to May 25 in the Sims Park, Coonoor, and finally the Plantation Crops Show at Kattery Park.
The Collector told reporters that adequate facilities, including parking areas, toilets and drinking water facilities would be made available for visiting tourists. When asked about the restrictions imposed by the High Court recently, limiting the number of vehicles being allowed to enter the district, and how the directives were to be implemented, the Collector said a meeting would be held comprising a high-level committee soon that would decide on the best means of implementing the orders.
