Punjab farmers' leader ends hunger strike, Centre agrees to talks, farmers express relief, tractor rally planned for January 26.
Farmers have expressed relief over Punjab farmers’ leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who was on fast-unto-death agitation in Punjab since November 26 last year in support of his demands, ending his fast and agreeing to take medical aid with the Centre agreeing to hold talks with the protesting farmers.
The Sugarcane Growers’ Association President and Federation of State Farmers’ Organisations President Kurubur Shanthkumar, in a press conference on Monday, said that the farmers in the State were worried over Dallewal’s health due to the hunger strike. The Centre agreeing to hold talks is a welcome step, he said.
Mr. Shanthkumar said Dallewal was on a fast-unto-death for over 50 days demanding a law that guarantees minimum support price for the farmers’ produce. With the Centre agreeing to hold the talks with the Punjab farmers, Dallewal has ended his fast and is taking medical treatment but has said that the protests will continue until the Centre meets the farmers’ demands, he stated.
This is a big victory for the farmers’ movement, and the Samyukta Kisan Morcha will continue the protests, he added.
Tractor rally on January 26
In support of the protesting farmers in Punjab, the farmers in the State will hold a tractor rally in all the district and taluk headquarters on January 26. Also, in Davangere, a programme will be held on January 30 in memory of the farmers who died for the cause of the country’s food security, he told reporters.
