Given that the proposed 250-metre high skydeck and the second airport for Bengaluru cannot be in close proximity of each other, the city’s civic body has now put the skydeck project on the backburner till the location of the proposed second airport is finalised. The decision comes as the State government focuses on finalising land for Bengaluru’s proposed second airport.
Sources in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) confirmed that Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister D.K. Shivakumar, to whom the skydeck has been has been a pet project, issued directions prioritising the airport project over the skydeck. The BBMP will resume efforts to identify suitable land to build the skydeck only after the airport location is finalised, a senior civic official said.
The BBMP had wanted to build the skydeck on either the New Government Electric Factory (NGEF) premises or within Karnataka Soaps and Detergents Limited (KSDL) premises. However, both locations were ruled out owing to security concerns, as the Airport Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) were unlikely to approve a high-rise structure in these areas.
After all proposed locations in the city were ruled out owing to objections from the airport and defence authorities, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike zeroed in on a 25-acre plot owned by Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises (NICE) in Hemmigepura in July 2024. It even invited objections from the public in November 2024, planning to acquire the land parcel in a barter with NICE. However, the company was not interested in such an exchange.
Meanwhile, work on identifying a suitable location and land for a second airport for the city began. Even as Home Minister G. Parameshwara is batting for setting it up along Tumakuru Road, Mr. Shivakumar is keen on setting it up in either Bidadi or Kanakapura, sources said.
While the government is yet to finalise the location for the second airport, the setting up a 250-metre high skydeck could jeopardise these plans, prompting Mr. Shivakumar to direct civic officials to press the pause button on the ambitious skydeck project for now.
