Singanallur flyover project in Coimbatore delayed due to cost revision, bids higher than ₹110 crore. Construction expected to start soon.
A flyover across Singanallur junction in Coimbatore city remains a non-starter as the cost for the project was finalised in 2022 and needs to be revised.
According to sources, the project cost for the 2.4 km flyover was fixed at ₹110 crore in 2022. The flyover work was delayed anticipating a metro rail project on Trichy Road. When the alignment for the metro rail was finalised as Avinashi Road and Sathyamangalam Road, the Highways Department (National Highways) decided to go ahead with the flyover at Singanallur.
Bids were invited five times, but the contractors quoted higher than ₹110 crore, prompting the Department to write to the Central Government to revise the project cost to current rates. “When this is approved, the project cost will be revised and bids will be called again. “We will finalise the Singanallur flyover project and start works this year,” said an official of the Department.
K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the Highways Department should do the needful to ensure the flyover project takes off. Bids have been invited multiple times. The officials should identify the issues in the proposed flyover works and address them so that the construction work takes off, he said.
A flyover planned at Saravanampatti will also be delayed as it will be taken up only with the metro rail work. At least the Singanallur flyover should not be delayed any further, he said.
