Devotees in large numbers offered flowers to Goddess Mariamman at the Arulmigu Mariamman Temple at Samayapuram near Tiruchi on Sunday on the occasion of the annual Poochorithal festival.
Poochorithal is a major holy event at the Samayapuram temple. The festival commenced early morning with ‘Vigneswara’ puja ‘Punyakavaajanam’, ‘Vaasthu santhi’ and Ankurarpanam.
The temple officials and temple trustees carried flowers in baskets and offered it to Goddess Mariamman at first. Thereafter, there was a steady stream of devotees offering flowers to the Goddess.
The festival marks the commencement of Pachai Pattini Viratham by Goddess Mariamman for 28 days starting from the last Sunday of the Tamil month Maasi to the last Sunday of the Tamil month Panguni for the welfare of the people.
‘During the 28-day fasting, the Goddess will be offered thullumaavu, buttermilk, karumbu paanakam and tender coconut water as Neivedhyam.
