Chennai Corporation has started setting up shelters at road junctions to shield motorists from the sun this summer.
After shelters were set up at locations such as Spencer’s Junction, GCC councillors in several wards have demanded more shelters at junctions in their area. Last year, such shelters were constructed in many junctions such as Raja Muthiah Road-Poonamallee High Road, Chetpet and Anna Nagar Second Avenue. The shelters were set up after residents shared on social media about such initiatives in Puducherry. GCC officials have also pointed to the risk of accidents to motorists because of shelters at the junctions.
Chennai Corporation ward 104 councillor T.V.Shemmozhi said he has requested the regional deputy commissioner to set up shelters at 12 road junctions including Anna Nagar Second Avenue.
Ward 88 councillor G.V.Nagavalli said the civic body has started preparations for the monsoon. “We are planning to set up such shelters at CTH Road junction in ward 88,” she said. Ms.Nagavalli said work on formulation of schemes were under way to ensure safe food, nutrition and hydration for children visiting GCC hospitals this summer. Ward 35 councillor S.Jeevan said the distribution of oral rehydration solution at Amma canteens in his ward was a success last year. “We will continue to supply butter milk and oral rehydration solution during this summer,” he said.
Velachery resident S.Kumararaja said the Chennai Corporation should supply safe drinking water at all offices and bus stops. “There is no provision of safe drinking water at bus stands. Residents visiting EB offices and metrowater offices do not get drinking water. Chennai Corporation should organise medical camps during the summer to improve public health,” he said.
