Greater Chennai Corporation proposes renaming Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street to 'Ravichandran Ashwin Street' in honor of the cricketer.
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has proposed to rename Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street in Kodambakkam Zone (X), Division 134, as ‘Ravichandran Ashwin Street’ after the acclaimed Chennai-born former cricketer.
The proposal was made at the GCC council meeting for Budget 2025 presided over by Mayor R. Priya at the Ripon Buildings on Friday (March 21, 2025).
The decision to rename the street was based on a request received from Carrom Ball Event & Marketing Pvt Ltd, whose Chief Operating Officer, S. Karthik highlighted Mr. Ashwin’s contributions to Indian cricket.
Besides Ramakrishnapuram 1st Street, Aryagowda Road in West Mambalam of the same Zone was also considered as a potential street for renaming.
“Mr. Ashwin has represented India and Tamil Nadu in numerous matches, winning several awards and accolades. He is widely recognised as one of the world’s best all-rounders,” the Greater Chennai Corporation resolution read.
The GCC had sought and received government approval to pass a resolution for the renaming of the street.
The proposal was earlier presented to the Standing Committee (Taxation and Finance), which recommended it for approval at the council meeting.
