The Puducherry police have arrested a 20-year-old youth and seized 4.120 kg of ganja from him at the temporary bus stand in the Union Territory.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Law and Order, R. Kalaivannan said the police identified the accused as Sithanandhan, a resident of Arumparthapuram. The arrest was made during an operation by the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) near the temporary bus stand. The accused was waiting at the bus stand to hand over the ganja concealed in a travel bag to his associate, he said in a release.
According to him, the accused ‘confessed’ to procuring the ganja from a village in Andhra Pradesh for selling it to prospective customers in Puducherry and Villupuram. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Efforts are on to arrest Sithanandhan’s associate.
Mr. Kalaivannan said under Operation Vidiyal, the police have been conducting special operations to prevent the sale of drugs in Puducherry. The ANTF and local police have arrested 299 drug peddlers and seized a total of 69.52 kg of ganja in 2024. In the previous year, four notorious drug peddlers were detained under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
Citizens are requested to inform the police about such activities through the toll-free number 112 or message on the WhatsApp number 9489205100. The identity of the informers will be kept confidential, the SSP said.
