Puducherry government awaits Centre’s nod to establish medical college at Karaikal: CM Rangasamy

Puducherry government plans to establish a medical college in Karaikal region, seeking permission from the Centre for development.
The Puducherry government has sought permission from the Centre to establish a medical college in Karaikal region of the Union Territory, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy informed the Assembly on Tuesday (March 18, 2025).
Replying to questions pertaining to medical issues by MLAs K.S.P Ramesh and P. R Siva, the Chief Minister said the government was keen on developing medical infrastructure in Karaikal region. The government has a proposal to establish a medical college at Thirunallar in Karaikal region, he said.
“We have written to the Central government. Steps will be taken to set up the medical college after we get clearance from Centre,” the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister said the government has initiated steps to recruit 276 nurses in the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute. The recruitment process will start after clearance from the Finance Department. Currently, there are only 147 nurses which was inadequate for patient management, the Chief Minister said.
Home Minister A. Namassivayam, who also holds the Electricity portfolio, informed the Assembly that the government has started the process to recruit 76 Junior Engineers in the Electricity Department.
Replying to a question by Senthil Kumar, the Minister said the recruitment of JEs will start soon. The newly recruited JEs will be posted both in rural and urban areas of Puducherry, he added.
