Kota Srinivas Poojary, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP, on Tuesday directed officials of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. to expedite construction of 30 new base transmission stations (BTS) for enhancing mobile network besides undertaking proper maintenance of existing BTS in Udupi district.
Chairing a meeting to review the performance of BSNL in the district, the MP noted that as against the demand for 180 new BTS for the district, the authorities have sanctioned 30. Officials at the Dakshina Kannada telecom district of BSNL should expedite construction of these new towers, he said.
The MP noted that as of now, 196 BTS of BSNL were functional in the district with 41 of them being equipped with 4G network. Among the 196, 75 BTS were facing issues with batteries and they stop receiving and despatching signals whenever there was power cut. Officials should take immediate steps to address the battery issue, he said.
Mr. Poojary urged BSNL officials to undertake proper maintenance of the BTS and other installations so as to provide quality service to consumers in urban and rural areas. People in rural area were complaining that optimum utilisation of BTS capacity was not being made by the BSNL. This could be addressed by regular and proper maintenance of towers, he said.
The MP asked BSNL and the district administration to address issues concerning land acquisition for construction of new BTS. Officials should properly respond whenever consumers contact them with grievances.
Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari suggested that BSNL construct BTS in areas of educational institutions with appropriate safeguards so as not to affect institutions’ functioning.
Kundapur Deputy Conservator of Forests Ganapathi, BSNL DK telecom district principal general manager Naveen Kumar, and others were present.
