Kalaburagi Police Commissioner aims to reduce road accidents by 15% in 2025 through enforcement and public awareness.
Expressing serious concern over lives being lost in road accidents in Kalaburagi, Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa has said that he has set a target of reducing road accidents by 15% in 2025.
“It was a good thing that accidents and traffic violations reduced by 5% in 2024 compared to the previous year. We have now set a target of further reducing it by 15% in 2025. It is not possible without people’s active participation,” Mr. Sharanappa said at a public meeting at S.V.P. Circle in Kalaburagi after holding a traffic awareness walkathon recently.
The event was organised by the Kalaburagi city police in association with the United Hospital.
Shedding light on measures taken to reduce accidents and traffic violations, he said that his department had identified certain hotspots in the city to intensify police vigilance and enforcement of traffic rules.
“We have also recently put in place the e-challan system. In the last two months, we have imposed fines on over 7,000 people who have violated traffic rules. In the same period, we have recorded over 10,000 traffic rules violation cases and imposed ₹55,00,000 in fines. We have also taken up a special drive against minors driving vehicles,” the officer said.
Emphasising the importance of following traffic rules, Mr. Sharanappa said that adherence to traffic rules would save valuable lives and prevent their families from going into deep crisis.
“This year, Kalaburagi city saw 25 fatal accidents of which 10 were involved in reckless driving. If the traffic rules were properly followed, all the lives would have been saved. We tell others to follow traffic rules. However, we ourselves don’t follow them often. If we don’t follow traffic rules and cause accidents, we will be a bad example for others,” he said.
