The festival starts with mangala isai and inauguration on January 14 evening followed by musical concerts. The main event is on the ‘Pushya Bahula Panchami’ day on January 18 when musicians will render the pancharathna kritis of Sri Thyagaraja at his ‘samadhi’ on the banks of the Cauvery at Thiruvaiyaru. It was on ‘Pushya Bahula Panchami that Sri Thyagaraja attained samadhi.
The Cubbon Park administration has said that any event organised inside the park with over 20 participants need prior permission from the Horticulture Department and in some cases, even permission from the police. This comes after the row over organisers of Cubbon Reads, a reading community, being detained on Saturday, as several turned up for a Secret Santa party.
