Confusion between Prayagraj Express and Prayagraj Special led to deadly stampede at New Delhi Railway Station.
Railway sources said there was unprecedented crowd for passengers going to Kumbh. So special trains were running since quite a few weeks. Prayagraj express was slated to arrive on platform 14, there was still sometime for the train to arrive, during this time, there was an announcement of a special train departing to Prayagraj from platform 12, so confused passengers who were to board Prayagraj express started moving towards platform 12.
The Delhi Police has found in its initial investigation the deadly stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station happened as passengers got confused between ‘Prayagraj Express and Prayagraj Special’, and thought they might miss their train, police sources said.
According to the preliminary investigation, the confusion happened because of the announcement of the trains having same initial name ‘Prayagraj’, said the sources.
Railway sources said that two Prayagraj-bound trains were slated to depart from platform 12 and 14. While both trains were Prayagraj bound, platform 14 was crowded and when an announcement for a train bound from same destination came indicating platform 12, passengers got confused. Passengers crossing foot over bridge and those on steps leading upto platform toppled over each other.
According to sources, information of a stampede was received from RPF and station master between 9.15 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. before departure of Prayagraj Express from platform 14 slated at 10.10 pm.
On February 15, 339 trains carrying over 14 lakh passengers departed for Kumbh Mela from Delhi stations.
