Residential building in Thippasandra tilts in East Bengaluru, occupants narrowly escape; authorities take swift action to prevent further damage.
A residential building in Thippasandra in East Bengaluru tilted and the occupants had a narrow escape on Wednesday evening.
The incident occurred around 4.58 p.m. as the building started crumbling due to ongoing basement work at the adjacent site. The occupants felt the building trembling and rushed out to safety.
Two fire tenders along with one NDRF team rushed to the spot and evacuated the residents to prevent further damage. The Jeevan Bima Nagar policesupervised the rescue operations. The police have informed the owner of the building, living in Chennai, and necessary action will be taken, a police official said.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike in a release said the incident occurred due to excavation of approximately five feet for a new building’s foundation in an adjacent vacant plot.
“This weakened the soil, leading to the tilting of the ground floor of a nearby 40-year-old (G+3) structure. The building tilted towards the construction site,” the release said.
Residents of the affected building and neighbouring houses have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Construction equipment have been deployed for demolition and ensuring swift removal of debris, officials said.
