After more than a week of speculation, following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the 2025 Delhi Assembly election, the party on Wednesday (February 19, 2025) announced Rekha Gupta as the capital’s Chief Minister.
Ms. Gupta, MLA-elect from Shalimar Bagh, will succeed Aam Aadmi Party’s Atishi as the city’s fourth woman Chief Minister.

In this year’s election Ms. Gupta from Shalimar Bagh defeated AAP’s Bandana Kumari, who had held the seat since 2013, by a significant margin of 29,595 votes. She is one of the five women who won seats in the 2025 election.
Ms. Gupta’s political journey has its roots in her Delhi University days, where she served as a General Secretary and President of the Delhi University Students Union from 1996-97.
An active member of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Ms. Gupta has also tasted electoral victory in Delhi Councillor elections. She was elected from Uttari Pitampura in 2007, and from North Pitampura in 2012.
Born in Julana, Haryana, Ms. Gupta studied at Daulat Ram College, Delhi University. She did her LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut in 2022.
