The Mangaluru city police booked office-bearers and other members of Hindu Hitarakshana Samiti for blocking movement of vehicles near Clock Tower Circle and causing inconvenience to people during the protest against atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh held in the city on Wednesday.

The protesters came in a procession from Ambedkar Circle to Clock Tower Circle at 10.45 a.m. Around 11 a.m. the protesters stood on the road and blocked movement of vehicles from Hampankatta to A.B. Shetty Circle. They argued with police officers and refused to move away from the road. Among the vehicles that were blocked included an ambulance coming from Hampankatta.
The police enabled two-way movement of vehicles between Clock Tower Circle and Rao and Rao Circle, which slowed down movement of vehicles on the stretch.
In the suo motu case registered at Mangaluru South police station, the police accused organisers of violating conditions and carrying out protest demonstration that caused hardship to motorists and other residents. The case was registered for offences punishable under Section 126(2), 270, 285 and 292 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 103 of Karnataka Police Act.
Accusing the police of aiding protesters and helping latter in holding the protest by blocking a main city road, Communist Party of India (Marxist) district secretary Muneer Katipalla said Police Commissioner Anupam Agrawal failed to take serious note of inflammatory speeches made during the protest demonstration.
