Man gets 20-year rigorous imprisonment for sexual harassment of minor

A special court for the exclusive trial of cases under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act on Wednesday (January 22, 2025) convicted and sentenced a 42-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually harassing an eight-year-old girl.

According to the prosecution, the accused identified as M. Nazir Basha, a grocery store owner from V. Sathanur in Vikravandi, sexually harassed the girl when she visited his shop to buy provisions on November 5, 2017. The girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the Villupuram All Women Police, who then arrested Basha.
The case was taken up for trial by the special court on Wednesday. Special Court Judge M. Vinodha sentenced Basha to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment and slapped a fine of ₹10,000 on him. The court also ordered that ₹5 lakh be given as compensation to the girl.
