Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, ranks as India's third busiest airport for international passenger traffic, surpassing Chennai and Kochi.
Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru, has been the country’s third busiest airport for international passenger traffic for the third consecutive month.
“There has been a significant increase in international traffic in KIA over the last 12 months. We are now the third busiest airport for the last three months from an international passenger perspective after Delhi and Mumbai,” Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer, Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) told The Hindu.
KIA broke into the top three (international passenger traffic) in October 2024 beating Chennai and Kochi and has held on to this spot.
“Earlier that was not the case. We were fifth behind Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kochi and then there was Bengaluru airport but for the last three months we have been ahead of Chennai and Kochi as well. So, it is moving in the right direction,” he added.
Mr. Raghunath added that in January, the airport handled more than half a million international passengers. “Last month, we handled over half a million passengers internationally. But it keeps varying every time the schedule changes, but they are minor variations. We are averaging now over half a million passengers a month internationally.”
As per Airport Authority of India data, KIA in October 2024, handled 4.8 lakh international passengers. This month, Delhi and Mumbai held the top two spots with 17.5 lakh and 12.5 lakh international passengers. Chennai and Kochi airports, which until October held the third and fourth spots, handled 4.5 lakh and 4.1 lakh international passengers.
In the subsequent months, KIA handled 5.4 lakh and 5.6 lakh passengers even as Delhi and Mumbai held on to the top two spots.
