FIR lodged against West Bengal Education Minister, driver, and professor after violence at Jadavpur University, sparking controversy.
An FIR was lodged against West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu, his driver, and Professor Om Prakash Mishra on Thursday (March 6, 2025) in connection with the violence at Jadavpur University on March 1.
The FIR was drawn after Calcutta High Court on Wednesday (March 5, 2025) directed the State Government to consider the version of students of Jadavpur University, who were caught in a scuffle with the State Education Minister, as a complaint.
“All the complaints are one-sided and from one perspective, the State has to behave like a State,” Justice Tirthankar Ghosh had said objecting to the fact that all the FIRs registered so far did not accommodate the version of the students. The FIR has been drawn on the statement made by Indranuj Roy, a 22-year-old student of the university who was allegedly hit by the Minister’s vehicle. The student was administered 14 stitches on his eye.
Prior to the FIR against the Minister, there were seven FIRs in which the students were added as accused. One alumnus of the university was arrested for the vandalism.
The students had gheroaed the vehicle of the Education Minister demanding students union elections and amid the commotion, the vehicle of the Minister drove away allegedly injuring the students.
Reacting to the FIR, Mr. Basu said that the driver of the vehicle got scared and drove over the protesting students.
Meanwhile, leaders of Trinamool Congress, including a few Ministers, have publicly issued threats to the students of the university saying that supporters of the ruling party can also lose patience.

The Puducherry government has decided to launch a scheme on April 14, 2025, to distribute free 20-litre water cans to households in places in the Union Territory (UT) where the quality of drinking water has deteriorated, Minister for Public Works K.
