
Ex-Principal of MCC Mithra G. Augustine passes away

Former MCC Principal and ECC Director, Dr. Mithra G. Augustine, remembered as visionary leader, educator, and mentor, passes away at 94.
Mithra G. Augustine, former Principal of Madras Christian College, Tambaram, and former director of the Ecumenical Christian Centre, Bangalore, died here, on Tuesday. He was 94. He is survived by his wife Beula Vasantha, daughter Melita and son Michael.
The professor was lauded by colleagues as a visionary and a transformative leader. Prof. Mitra was an alumnus of the College as well, completing his MSc there before going on to do a PhD in Entomology from Ohio State University as a Fulbright Scholar. He returned to teach at the MCC in 1962, where he was the Principal from 1981 to 1989.
“Dr. Mithra’s legacy has inspired generations of students and leaders. He was an educator with a passion for excellence and service, an author, a beloved mentor, role model, and friend of many,” said a professor. He has served on the governing bodies of several educational, theological and medical institutions, and on committees of the University Grants Commission as well. He was instrumental in shaping academic programmes, research initiatives, and community engagement.
According to college sources, the viewing will be held on Thursday, February 20, between 11.30 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Bishop Heber Chapel in Madras Christian College. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m.
