Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has written to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, to sanction a flyover or elevated highway from City Bus Stand to Indrali on the National Highway 169-A in Udupi.
Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has written to Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, to sanction a flyover or elevated highway from City Bus Stand to Indrali on National Highway 169-A in Udupi. This would help ease traffic congestion at Kalsanka Junction, Kadiyali and City Bus Stand area, he said in the letter on Saturday.
The MLA said that the increasing number of visitors to Udupi owing to several prominent attractions has caused significant bottlenecks, especially at key junctions such as Kalsanka, Kadiyali and City Bus Stand. Traffic congestion has been severely affecting local commuters, tourists and pilgrims.
Mr. Suvarna said that Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt, a revered pilgrimage centre for devotees from all over the country, educational institutions in Manipal, Maple beach and fishing harbour, St. Mary’s Island and other beaches in Udupi and nearby draw heavy footfall.
“...The combined impact of these attractions has placed immense pressure on the local infrastructure, particularly at the city bus stand and its surrounding areas. As a result, traffic congestion has become a daily challenge, impacting the movement of commuters and tourists alike...”
Constructing a flyover or elevated highway would not only help in easing the traffic flow but also provide smoother connectivity for commuters, the MLA said.
Mr. Suvarna on Saturday handed over the letter to Kota Srinivas Poojary, Member of Parliament, Udupi-Chikkamgaluru, to be sent to Mr. Gadkari’s office. The MLA said on the occasion that the Udupi City Municipal Council would also write to Mr. Gadkari on the matter.
Accepting the letter, Mr. Poojary said that he would arrange a meeting between the MLA and Mr. Gadkari in this regard in Delhi. ‘‘We will appeal to the Minister to sanction an elevated highway from City Bus Stand to Indrali,’’ the MP said.
