The DMK cadres organised a protest in Kovilpatti against the Union government for not allocating funds for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).
The protest in Kovilpatti was presided over by the Lok Sabha member Kanimozhi Karunanidhi. Addressing the gathering, she said: “The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has been continuously writing to the Prime Minister urging him to release the pending funds of MGNREGS.”
“Even last month, the Tamil Nadu Finance Minister and I personally met the Union Finance Minister to make this request. Similarly, we met the Union Minister of Agriculture and informed him that Tamil Nadu had not received the allocated funds for several months. As a result, workers engaged in the scheme have not been paid their wages,” she said.
Ms. Kanimozhi said: “At that time, we were assured that the funds will be released within a few weeks. However, the funds have not yet been provided. Following this, we raised this issue in Parliament during question hour demanding the immediate release of ₹4,034 crore, which has been pending for the past five months. Since there was no proper response from the Union government, the DMK staged a protest within parliament where Opposition parties also joined us in raising the issue.”
After Parliament was adjourned, the Union Ministers assured the DMK MPs that the funds would be released in the first week of April. However, Ms. Kanimozhi questioned the credibility of the assurance stating that similar promises had been made in the past but not kept.
She also pointed out that the Union government had linked education funding to the acceptance of three-language formula in Tamil Nadu. “The BJP leaders pretend to care about the people of Tamil Nadu, but their actions prove otherwise,” she said.
Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan, Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy and MGNREGS workers were present.
