Amidst preparation for the execution of the ₹40,000-crore tunnel road within Bengaluru connecting the North-South and the East-West corridors, the Karnataka government has proposed a peripheral tunnel road connecting various national highways coming into Bengaluru.
The project is among the 12 that have been proposed by the State government across Karnataka for which approval has been sought from the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry. Currently, the State government is looking at Hebbal-Silk board tunnel connectivity and K.R. Puram-Mysuru Road (Nayandahalli) tunnel connectivity.
In the latest instance, the State has proposed construction of a tunnel connecting Mysuru Road (NH-275) and Hosur Road (NH 48 & NH 75) (Electronics City) via Tumakuru Road (NH 48), Ballari Road (NH 44) and Old Madras Road (Old NH-4) in Bengaluru city.
Thanking Union Minister Nitin Gadkari for approving six projects earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday sought approval of major projects, including the tunnel connectivity of highways in Bengaluru.
The Chief Minister, during his meeting with the Union Minister in Delhi on Wednesday, sought upgrading State highways with the traffic density of more than 10,000 passenger car units (PCU) and sanctioning for socio-economic development of the State. The State has also sought enhancement of sanction of national highway works of ₹24,000 crore under the 2025-2026 annual plan.
Among the new projects, Karnataka has sought early sanction of Pune-Bengaluru Greenfield expressway; construction of a tunnel in Shiradi Ghat on National Highway 75 to improve the connectivity between Mangaluru port and Bengaluru; upgradation of road declared in principle as national highways on priority; construction of nine grade separators on NH 275 in Mysuru Ring Road, and construction of elevated corridor in Belagavi city on Pune-Bengaluru NH 4 for decongestion of Belagavi city.
