Cyberabad citizens lost ₹793 crore to cybercrimes in 2024, nearly 900% rise in digital arrest cases

Cyberabad police report 882.35% increase in digital arrest fraud cases, with citizens losing ₹793 crore to cybercrimes.
Cyberabad police commissionerate recorded 882.35% jump in the number of cases pertaining to digital arrest fraud in 2024; while 102 cases were registered in 2023, it increased to 1,002 this year.
Overall cybercrime cases increased by 112% as 11,914 cases were booked in 2024 from 5,361 in 2023. Put together, citizens in the commissionerate limits lost ₹793 crore to cybercrimes this year. Part time job frauds (3,267), trading fraud (1,686) and smishing fraud (1,276) were the top Modus Operandi (MO) in 2024.
As of November 30, 2024, a total of ₹49.64 crore was returned to the cybercrime victims as opposed to ₹20.79 crore in 2023. A total of ₹71.28 crore involved in fraudulent transactions was frozen in bank accounts.
The data was released during the Cyberabad police’s annual round-up held at the Commissionerate’s headquarters in Gachibowli on Tuesday (December 24, 2024).
The police commissioner Avinash Mohanty said that the total number of crime cases registered increased from 22,859 in 2023 to 37,689 in 2024, marking an increase of 64.88%, highest among the tri-commissionerate in twin cities.
Non-fatal and non-injury road accidents saw a slight increase from 2,224 to 3,024. Economic offences rose from 1,551 to 2,140, property offences jumped from 2,904 to 4,681, cases under 498A/dowry harassment increased from 1,030 to 1343.
