Belagavi Congress centenary celebrations criticized by BJP MP as wasteful party event with fake Gandhis attending.
The State government has turned the centenary celebrations of the 1924 Belgaum Congress Session as a party programme, BJP MP Jagadish Shettar said in Belagavi on Tuesday.
He criticised the centenary celebrations as a waste of public money on a party programme, that will be attended by fake Gandhis.
He told reporters that the Congress government in the State has belittled the stature of the event by making it a party function.
It is a matter of pride for all of us that this year marks the centenary of Gandhiji’s chairmanship of the 1924 Belgaum Congress Session, he said.
It should have been an event of national importance. The State government should have celebrated it at a cost of around ₹500 crore, with financial assistance from the Centre, he said.
Instead, the State government has decided to organise the celebrations at the local level with its own funds. What is more, it has turned it into a local party event, Mr. Shettar said.
He said that it was BJP MLA Abhay Patil who first raised the demand for funds for the centenary event a few years ago in the Assembly.
Titled ‘Theatre as a tool in education’, the conference will be a discussion on various topics including classrooms as theatre, theatre for toddlers, philosophy for children, theatre as a therapy for children, writing for children, making theatre for young audiences, curriculum drama, integrating creativity into education, creating an anti-oppressive classroom and more.
