Kozhikode Corporation plans to set up a CBG plant with BPCL, aiming to convert organic waste into clean fuel.
Kozhikode Corporation is moving ahead with its project to set up a Compressed Biogas (CBG) Plant at Njeliyanparamba with the help of Bharat Petroleum Company Ltd (BPCL). The Company has already expressed its willingness to set up the plant at Njeliyanparamba using its Corporate Social Responsibility Fund and discussions have been on for a while in this regard.
The plant, with a capacity to process 150 tonnes of organic waste per day, may take two years to materialise if the Corporation provides 8 acres of land on lease for 20 years. As the project is unlikely to create any financial liability to the Corporation as it is completely funded by BPCL, there may not be many objections to the project as it is to be presented before the Corporation council on Monday (February 17) for its approval.
The Kozhikode Corporation was planning to construct a Waste to Energy Plant at Njeliyanparamba for which, the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation was the nodal agency and Bengaluru-based Zonta Infratech Private Ltd was the implementing agency. However, the project was cancelled after Zonta Infratech failed to even complete the biomining and capping at the site in four years and also fell into some bad weather following the fire at the Brahmapuram waste management plant in Kochi, which was under its management.
A CBG plant produces renewable energy from organic waste and the gas produced in it is a clean fuel that can be used in place of compressed natural gas (CNG) in vehicles, industries, and commercial settings. All kinds of organic waste including remains of plants and animals can be used to make biogas, which is then purified and compressed to make CBG.
