Udupi Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari on Wednesday directed the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to undertake periodical maintenance of NH66 without giving room for complaints.
Chairing a review meeting of the National Highways at Rajatadri, the district office complex in Manipal, Ms. Vidyakumari said if the NHAI and its concessionaires attend to potholes and other issues concerning the highway, people would not complain to the administration. The administration would not be able to call frequent meetings on routine issues, she pointed out.
The DC noted that people pay a toll to drive on the NH and it was the duty of the NHAI to keep the highway in good condition. People have been complaining about potholes and craters on the highway post-monsoon. There were also complaints about malfunctioning/ non presence of street lights at several stretches.
The NHAI and the concessionaire should work in coordination and attend to complaints by the public. Ms. Vidyakumari asked the NHAI to keep the concessionaire on alert to attend to issues as and when the lacunae are noticed. She said it would be desirable if people use the Rajmargyatra app designed by the NHAI to register their complaints.
Ms. Vidyakumari told the officials that residents of Brahmavar were demanding a service road, opening of the median, and a flyover. These demands should be considered on priority. Regarding opening of the median, a decision would be taken at the road safety committee meeting after the spot inspection.
Participants in the meeting highlighted issues, including potholes and craters on the highway, streetlight management, clearing of the vegetation on the highway median and flanks, maintenance of pedestrian paths and road shoulders etc.
Superintendent of Police K. Arun, NHAI officials and others were present.
