Family of deceased fisherman protests for welfare assistance due to lack of final post-mortem report and government support.
Family members of a fisherman who died in 2021 while fishing in the Vaigai river in Ramanathapuram district, demanding welfare assistance, protested by seeking alms at the Collectorate here on Monday.
M. Vasantha, wife of the fisherman, said she was not provided with the final post-mortem report. As they did not get the final report, they were not able to apply for the welfare assistance granted by the Tamil Nadu government to the family of fisherfolk who lost their husband or any other relative to accidents in water.
“I have been struggling for more than three years along with my two sons, aged 15 and 12, to secure a livelihood to run our family. But, without support from the fishermen welfare board or the government, the search for a better livelihood seems impossible,” she added.
The final report and granting of welfare assistance should be solved by the district administration, she appealed.
The Madras High Court on Thursday (January 2, 2025) refused to interfere with the conviction and one-month simple imprisonment imposed by a trial court in February 2024 against actor S.Ve. Shekher in a case booked in 2018 for having shared a Facebook post containing derogatory remarks against women journalists.
