Water released from Thirumoorthy Dam for irrigation in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts; DPR submitted for PAP canal revamp.
The Water Resources Department on Wednesday released water from the Thirumoorthy Dam into the PAP (Parambikulam Aliyar Project) in Palar Sub-basin for irrigation of third zone of 94,362 acres.
The project covers 3,77,152 acres encompassed in four zones in Coimbatore and Tiruppur districts.
State Ministers M.P. Saminathan and N. Kayalvizhi Selvaraj released water from the shutters of the dam in the presence of District Collector T. Christuraj, WRD Superintending Engineer Karthikeyan, other senior officials of the Revenue Department, and representatives of farmers’ associations.
Five rounds of wetting for the third zone will be carried out for a cumulative duration of 135 days until June 13. The five cycles of wetting for zone two were completed on January 6.
Altogether, not less than 10,300 mcft of water will be released for irrigating the fields in Pollachi, Kinathukadavu and Sulur areas in Coimbatore district, and Udumalpet, Madathukulam, Palladam, Tiruppur, Kangayam and Dharapuram, in Tiruppur district.
On Wednesday, 250 cusecs were released. The extent of release will be increased gradually to 912 cusecs, an official press release said. This year, abundant rainfall from the Southwest and Northeast monsoons brought in copious flow into the dams in PAP system, making possible release of water for the third zone.
On Wednesday, water level in the Thirumoorthy Dam stood at 52.62 feet against the maximum of 60 feet. The storage was 1,429 mcft against a capacity of 1,744 mcft. An inflow of 835 cusecs was recorded.
