Turkish Consul General emphasizes the need for increased connectivity between Hyderabad and Istanbul for mutual benefits.
Consul General (CG) of Turkiye Orhan Yalman Okan on Wednesday said that for Hyderabad to become a global city, it needs to increase its connectivity to global destinations, and that his country was waiting with ‘impatience’ for the Union government to accord permission for Turkish Airlines to operate here.
The CG was speaking at the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency’s (TGA) India Destination Promotion Event 2025, a six-city tour which seeks to bring about a collaboration between stakeholders of the two countries.
Underscoring Turkiye’s tourism infrastructure, Mr. Okan pointed out that around 17 million passengers used Istanbul airport, which handled around 1,400 flights each day, last year. He said that Turkish Airlines flies to 360 destinations spread over 130 countries.
“I am sharing with you all these figures because it is incomprehensible for me to see that there is no direct flight between Istanbul and Hyderabad,” he said. “As of today, Hyderabad has direct flights only to 16 international destinations. Eight of them to the west; and eight of them to the east.”
“It is actually a pity that the people of Telangana have to travel to Delhi or Mumbai or Bangalore to take most of the international flights. Besides, you have a wonderful airport here which has a huge capacity to increase the number of flights,” he said.
“We are waiting with impatience for the Indian government to give necessary permission to Turkish Airlines so that they can fly from Istanbul to Hyderabad. And of course, Turkish Airlines will cooperate with one of the Indian airlines companies so that it would be a win-win process for both sides,” he said.
The CG recalled the outpouring of solidarity from India for Turkey after his country was devastated by earthquakes two years ago.
