District Collector schedules special meeting to review no-confidence motion against Mayor; NDA and YSRCP prepare for showdown.
District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad has finalised April 19, to organise a special meeting to review the no-confidence motion against Mayor (YSRCP) G. Hari Venkata Kumari. The notice was submitted by the corporators from the NDA on March 19. The meeting will be held at the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) at 11 a.m.
Corporators from the NDA and the YSRCP are leaving no stone unturned to emerge victorious on that day. With more than two weeks left for the meeting, the NDA is busy in gathering some more support and the YSRCP is safeguarding their corporators.
At present, there are 97 corporators for 98 wards and 14 ex-officio members in the GVMC. As of now, the NDA corporators claim that their strength is 72 which includes 48 TDP corporators, 11 Jana Sena Party (JSP), two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) corporators, apart from 12 ex-officio members. Similarly, YSRCP has 34 corporators and three ex-officio members. The remaining two corporators are from the CPI and the CPI(M). It needs about two-third of votes to win the no-confidence motion, which is 74 votes, the corporators said.
Already the YSRCP has shifted all its corporators to a camp in Karnataka. The corporators have even skipped the recently held special meeting to discuss the budget 2025-26.
However, sources from the GVMC council said that a few more YSRCP corporators have been staying away from the party activities for the past few months and they are likely to support the NDA during the no-confidence motion.
“We have 72 votes as of now, but we will definitely get more support from the YSRCP corporators. Some of them are ready to support the NDA government, since their wards were neglected by the previous government and they believe that their wards could be developed only by the present government,” said a corporator from the TDP.
Meanwhile, the YSRCP leaders led by former Minister Gudivada Amarnath have submitted a representation to District Collector Harendhira Prasad and Commissioner of Police Shankabratha Bagchi, alleging that some of the NDA corporators with the help of police are threatening their party corporators.
