Authorities successfully capture tiger in H.D. Kote after weeks of search, to be released back into Nagarahole Tiger Reserve.
Nearly a month after a tiger was sighted and suspected to be on the prowl in and around Chakahalli in H.D. Kote, the authorities managed to trap and capture it much to the relief of the local community.
The Forest Department received alerts and complaints of the presence of a big cat in the human landscape in the first week of December. The authorities inspected the area and on discovering pug marks confirmed that they indeed belonged to a tiger and set camera traps and deployed personnel from the Special Tiger Force and Leopard Task Force to comb the area.
But the big cat proved elusive for days forcing the authorities to deploy thermal drone to zero in on the tiger. Besides, camp elephants were also pressed into service to comb the area and corner the animal so that it could be darted, tranquilized and captured. However, none of it yielded results and finally, the Forest Department staff placed a walk-through-cage at K.G. Hundi village on December 17, 2024.
After days of avoiding the cage the big cat walked into the trap sometime late on Sunday. Basavaraj, Deputy Conservator of Forests (Territorial) said that it turned out to be an adult tigress. ‘’It was examined by the wildlife veterinarians and as per the directives of the senior forest department officials, it will be released back into the wild at Nagarahole Tiger Reserve,” said Mr. Basavaraj.
The forest cover is high in H.D. Kote taluk which abuts both Bandipur and Nagarahole tiger reserves and hence human-animal conflict is high in the region. As the forests are rich in wildlife, animals frequently stray into the human landscape in search of prey, or fodder in case of herbivores like elephants, escalating conflict situation.
The authorities are maintaining vigil and also instructing people living in villagers bordering forest, to seek security in numbers and not venture out alone during dawn or after dusk.
