The idols were that of Lord Perumal, Sri Devi, and Bhoo Devi. The pit was being dug by an individual to a depth of about six feet to construct a water tank near his house at Vengankudi village.
The find was reported to the Tahsildar of Manachanallur taluk, who, along with other officials, conducted an inquiry. The three idols, weighing about 60 kg in total, were later taken to the taluk office.
The height of the Perumal idol is about 2 ft, while the height of the other two idols is about 1.5 ft.
Official sources said information about the idols has been conveyed to the Archaeology Department officials. Efforts are on to hand the idols over to the sub-treasury office at Manachanallur.
