Expressing concerns over the diminishing interest of the younger generation in traditional art forms like theatre, Tayanna Yeragera, a senior theatre artist from Raichur, appealed to the people, especially the youngsters, to protect and develop theatre.
“I appeal to you to get more passionate about theatre than cinema. It needs your patronage to survive and develop. I also appeal to you to nurture reading habits. There are a number of writers who have created a good literature. We need to read it. We have a rich tradition of folk art. We need protect and further enrich,” he said.
He was speaking after inaugurating Rangadangaladali Matukate, an interactive theatre session, organised by Rangayana, Kalaburagi, and the Department of Kannada and Culture at HKES Pre-University College of Science and Commerce for Girls on Thursday.
“The younger generation is not very aware of traditional theatre. The habit of reading literature has also disappeared. The advent of smartphones and social media has destroyed traditional values and art forms. We need to somehow protect the younger generation from being spoiled. Reorienting them to theatre and literature could be one of the ways to do this,” he said.
Sujata Jangamashetty, director, Rangayana (Kalaburagi), who presided over the session, asked the students to identify their talents and provide a conducive environment to nurture them. “The only thing that we have to do is maintain a distance from mobile phones and pay adequate attention to study and encourage the talent within. This will take you in a better and brighter direction. We need to come out of conservative outlook and expand the out view to the new things and thoughts, no matter how others take it,” she said.
The principal of HKES Pre-University College of Science and Commerce for Girls Ushadevi P. Patil, academician K. Lingappa, senior theatre artist H.S. Basappa, Deputy Director of Rangayana Jagadeeshwarai Nasi and others were present.
