The rural town of Thatchankurichi in Gandarvakottai taluk in Pudukottai district played host to Tamil Nadu’s first jallikattu event of 2025, marking the beginning of the bull-taming festival season in the State on Saturday (January 4, 2025).

The event was formally inaugurated by Minister for Law S. Regupathy and Minister for Backward Classes Welfare Siva V. Meyyanathan at 8:15 a.m. in the presence of District Collector M. Aruna, who administered the oath to the tamers.
The jallikattu arena was abuzz with excitement as bulls were released one by one through the “vadivasal.” According to sources, around 600 bulls and at least 350 tamers were expected to participate in the event. Hundreds of bulls were transported from the neighbouring districts to the village in mini trucks.
A posse of over 315 police personnel were deployed to regulate and control the crowd, while separate teams of healthcare officials were stationed to provide medical assistance to the injured bulls and tamers. Medical examinations for bulls and tamers were conducted before allowing them into the arena.
A medical team with an ambulance was deployed at the bull collection area; a fleet of ambulances was also placed on standby.
